Mentzer College Football Rankings?

What factors are included in the Mentzer College Football Rankings? I read this interesting article on rivals.com that basically says: according to computer algorithms Penn State football isn't very good. Yet, the Mentzer College Football Rankings are similar to the USA Today, AP, and BCS polls. The guy who wrote the article seemed to put more weight on computer rankings than human polls.

Either way, the fate of Penn State's post-season will pretty much be determined this weekend in Columbus...

  1. The only factors in the Mentzer Rankings are wins and losses.

    3 points for a win
2 points for every opponent's wins that you beat
1 point for every opponent's opponent's wins that the opponent beat if you beat the opponent.

The same formula is used to determine number of losses. Then the percentage is Number of Win Points with Number of Loss points

Also, Any games against 1 AA teams count, but the 1 AA teams schedule will only come into account if they play another 1A team.

So, For Penn State it looks like this

    Opponent W OppW OppOppW Total
    Coastal Carolina 3 0 0 3
    Oregon State 3 8 11 22
    Syracuse 3 2 0 5
    Temple 3 6 7 16
    Illinois 3 8 9 20
    Purdue 3 4 6 13
    Wisconsin 3 8 15 26
    Michigan 3 4 6 13
    Ohio State 3 14 27 44

Teams remaining on the schedule have not been calculated in yet So Penn States Total is 162 - 0 Giving them a Winning Percentage of 1.000

    Ohio State looks like this
    Opponent W L OppW L OppOppW L Total W L
    Youngs St. 3 x 0 x 0 x 3 x
    Ohio 3 x 4 x 11 x 22 x
    USC x 3 x 2 x 3 x 8
    Troy 3 x 10 x 8 x 21 x
    Minnesota 3 x 14 x 20 x 37 x
    Wisconsin 3 x 8 x 15 x 26 x
    Purdue 3 x 4 x 6 x 13 x
    Mich St. 3 x 14 x 25 x 42 x
    Penn St. x 3 x 0 x 0 x 3

Ohio States current total is 151 - 11 giving them a winning percentage of 0.873 If Penn State were to lose, then Ohio State would have 2 more points added to their loss record for losing to Penn State and then however many losses the team that Penn State lost to would also be added to Ohio States loss total.

    I hope that explains it.
