Who saw this coming?

I guess if the O's aren't going to stop them from scoring runs, they better be able to score a lot. They must think that Slammin Sammy Sosa might be able to help them score more, unless he can pitch too.

  1. This deal feels like a "panic" by Beattie and Flanagan (O's braintrust). They didn't sign anybody all winter and needed a name. Sammy's been on the decline for 3 seasons now and if the decline continues, well....

However, in the spirit of pre-season optimism, I'll argue that this could turn out to be a good deal for the O's.

Sammy might have a decent season. He'll be batting somewhere in the middle of Tejada, Palmeiro, Lopez and Gibbons. That ain't gonna hurt him.

The O's were pitiful against left handed pitching last season. Having Sosa in the lineup can't hurt and it could help.

Hairston has been shipped out of town. While I'm sad to see Jerry go, there was always the potential that the presence of both Hairston and Roberts could cause dissension. It has been suspected that this has already happened in past seasons. With Hairston in Chicago, Roberts gets the clear message that he's the 2nd baseman and leadoff hitter for the O's. Roberts has always responded well in the past when he's gotten this opportunity.
